FULL AUTO: The Cape Gun Works Blog

What do you do if a gun’s not for you?
Frequently, couples visit Cape Gun Works, concerned about personal and home defense. Most of these folks happily complete the Massachusetts License to Carry class, and continue on to purchase firearms. Occasionally, we find that people decide firearm ownership is not right for them. They are still concerned about effective defensive measures, but seek an alternative to guns. What options do they have?
As an alternative to defensive firearm use, the first option is a Taser. The modern version of this tool will not only disable an attacker, it will automatically notify local first responders that the weapon has been discharged. By connecting the weapon to a system called Noonlight, your exact GPS position is relayed to the nearest Public Safety Answering Point. Police are then dispatched to the location of the discharge. Note that we say “location of discharge”. This weapon is intended to disable an attacker through an electric charge, resulting in central nervous system overload. This allows the user to quickly get away from the scene of the attack. A user should call 9-1-1 at the first opportunity to give further information to police.
A second option is the “stun gun” type of electric defense weapon. These instruments also deliver a disabling electric charge to an attacker, but require close contact to do so. The result is pain compliance, rather than nervous overload. Once contact with the body is disrupted, the electrical charge is no longer delivered. Both electrical weapons require a License to Carry Firearms in Massachusetts.
Non-electric options (that do not require a firearms license) include the Pepper Ball Life Lite Mobile. This is a pepper ball launching device, that allows for delivery of an irritant at a stand-off distance of up to 40 feet. The device includes a 350 lumen flashlight as well. In one easy-to-carry device, the Life Lite delivers a disabling cloud of pepper irritant, allowing the user to remove themselves from the scene. The pepper ball itself can also leave a painful impact.
Traditional pepper sprays are also available. They come in a wide variety of canisters, some the size of a ball point pen, others the size of a can of hair spray. The devices have a difference in effective range, and care should be taken to understand how far away a user needs to be from an intended target before carrying.
Both the Taser Pulse and Pepper Ball Life Lite are in stock and available at Cape Gun Works, as well as a variety of pepper sprays. Stop in soon to check them out!
